01 · The commercial question
You do not have to apologise for writing commercial fiction.
Readers are allowed to want specific pleasures. Authors are allowed to write books that deliver them—and to expect those books to earn money.
A commercial book can still be ambitious, strange, tender, dark, funny, or beautifully made.
The reader promise gives you a clear job: deliver the pleasure the reader came for, then make the book vivid, specific and entirely your own.
AI speeds up the work. You decide what belongs on the page.
